Nib planting gives local authorities the opportunity to plant trees in streets that present problems for traditional pavement plantings. This type of tree planting is facilitated by and dependent upon the implementation of road restructuring schemes which create an opportunity for trees to be moved into the carriageway from the highway, softening the road/pavement divide.

Nibs are bays built into the road, the dimensions of which are reliant upon and influential to traffic and pedestrian flows. They are therefore site specific. A fundamental of any such scheme is based upon local government policy, balancing the priorities of transport, commerce and the environment. From these criteria guidelines can be developed.

One of the easiest situations in which to implement nib plantings are in one-way streets where they are used to demarcate existing or proposed parking bays. However, the procedure can be upgraded to incorporate more complex road types.

Such schemes offer an effective plan for investing in landscaping inner cities, simultaneously calming traffic and promoting pedestrian friendly areas. Furthermore, they offer an opportunity to establish 'green corridors' between London's parks and squares, turning a concrete jungle into an urban forest.
